Ford Forcing You to Obey Speed Limits

Most drivers do not exactly follow the speed limit and breaking the speed limit often comes at a price. Ford is hoping to prevent accidents and speeding tickets by introducing cars that can see what the speed limit is and preventing heavy-footed motorists from driving any faster. Ford’s Intelligent Speed Limiter tech will appear on the new Ford S-Max that’s launching in Europe that could just change the way everyone drives.

So how does the system work? A camera is mounted on the windshield and it scans the road signs on the sides of the highway. Then when the car htis a 20mph zone, the system reduces the top speed to match the speed limit. Rather than controlling the speed with automatic braking, the car limits its power by adjusting the amount of fuel being pushed to the engine.

If a burst of speed is required users can either deactivate the system by pressing a button on the console or temporarily bypass the system by pressing hard on the gas pedal. If the vehicle is coasting downhill and starts to build up speed, the car will sense its motion and sound an alarm to get you braking. It’s not the only bit of new safety tech available on the new car. The car can also be equipped with pedestrian detection and collision warnings. That frees drivers up to pay even less attention to the road.

Currently this car is only in Europe, and I am glad because I do not want to have a car that limits it’s speed to the speed limit. I typically drive over the speed limit and would never think of getting a car that would limit my driving to the speed limit. My other thoughts would be if the car could recognize that the 20mph school zone is only during particular hours or will I have to mess with the system every time I driving by a school zone? How do you feel about a car that will limit you to the speed limit?
