The CEO of Jeep, Mike Manley, stated that the next Wrangler might get a plug-in hybrid option. Manley said that adding an electric motor is a great idea as it would be able to provide immediate torque. That immediate torque would be useful for off-road adventures.
One of the biggest problems is that current battery technology does not work well with the off road lifestyle. If you are a couple hours or several miles into a trail, no hybrid power train could be supported.
They have also thought about using more aluminum for the new Wrangler. They are also thinking about carbon fiber as another way to lighten the vehicle. The biggest concern is how much can the lighten the vehicle using new materials without loosing the iconic look of the Wrangler. The 2018 Jeep Wrangler will probably get an eight speed automatic transmission. With all of these questions about the vehicle and where to go, they better start making some decisions quickly as it is scheduled to go on sale at near the end of 2017 (as a 2018 model).
